This January saw the very first Preston Lodge S1 Adventure, two residential excursions to Lagganlia Centre for Outdoor Learning in the wild and beautiful Glen Feshie, in the heart of the Cairngorms. The driving force for this project was inclusion, and giving every child the opportunity to experience a residential trip.
Beach clean fundraising activities involving our young people and funding secured by PLLF was used to put in place a residential trip for the entire cohort of S1 pupils. The funding was used to minimise or negate the cost of the trip to families.
The aim of the trip was to develop the 6Rs through a series of outdoor adventures and experiences.
Reflective: We Learn from experience and have a growth mindset
Reasoning: We think carefully and plan things out
Resilient: We don’t give up when the going gets tough
Resourceful: We find different ways to get things done
Respectful: We respect ourselves, other people and our environment
Responsible: We are ready for learning and we work well with others
We were lucky enough to get substantial snowfall, which meant that pupils and staff had the opportunity to try cross-country and downhill skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and building igloos, as well as climbing and abseiling.
Pupils also participated in an exciting programme of evening activities, being inspired by a talk from the ‘First Piper’ and singing in (almost) unison around the campfire. It was an absolute delight for both PL staff and the instructors at Lagganlia to witness the improvements in confidence, resilience and responsibility amongst our young people, as well as the respect and kindness they demonstrated in encouraging members of their groups.
